A meeting of 14 people took place on 26th January 2009 to form a group to protect/preserve/promote the area known variously as the 'Lang Fields' and the 'Carrs' in the face of the Golf Resort proposals. This follows the public meeting at West Kirby Concourse on 2 July 2008. There are concerns over the reported plans for the area as it has been rich in wildlife since medieval times (when it was a swannery), and is significant as an adjunct to the Dee Estuary.
As well as the many varieties of bird life, water vole have been recorded, as have rare snails.
A further meetings of the group (to be called the Upper Birket Valley Group for the time being) was held in March, and discussions are continuing.
Golf Resort Proposal
Little is yet known of the Wirral Council scheme whch centres on about 330 acres of land north of Saughall Massie Road between Hoylake Municipal golf Course and Heron Road. This is largely Green Belt land, with five footpaths across it, and is important to wading birds and other wildlife.
The area was recently the focus of a series of Guided Wildlife Walks on public footpaths in Hoylake Carr Fields, supported by Wirral Green Belt Council, Wirral Footpaths and Open Spaces Preservation Society, Cheshire Wildlife Trust, and Transition Town West Kirby
Photographs of Carr Fields and the Birkett Valley, taken on these walks are below:-
